Timeline's pop-up notifications: buttons, sounds, and what they do over games
No hunting for the file afterwards: the pop-up has the buttons you need, and it appears without stealing focus from your game.
Timeline
What the pop-up is
Instead of the standard Windows notification, Timeline shows its own small pop-up with buttons and its own sound. It slides in from the edge of the screen and goes away by itself.
| When | Buttons |
|---|---|
| A recording is saved | Open recording, Show in folder |
| A clip is saved | Open clip, Show in folder |
| A trim finishes or fails | A notice from Timeline |
| An upload finishes | Copy link, Open link |
| Something needs attention | Hotkey conflicts, an unfinished recording, the clip buffer turned off |
Try it in Timeline
Free for Windows 10 and 11. One installer, nothing else to set up.
Over games, without touching them
The pop-up is a small window that does not take focus: your game keeps the keyboard and the mouse. Timeline does it without injecting anything into the game and without hooks, so it does not interfere with anti-cheat software.
Careful. A game in true exclusive fullscreen can hide any normal window, including this one. In that case the pop-up is skipped (a window on top would knock the game out of fullscreen) and you only hear the sound. Use the game's borderless fullscreen mode to see the pop-up.
Change how it behaves
Open Settings, General, Notifications.
- Show Timeline notifications: the master switch. When off, Timeline uses the standard Windows notification instead.
- Show over games: on by default; see the limit above.
- Position: pick the corner or edge it appears at.
- Stays on screen for: from 2 to 20 seconds (6 by default). It stays while your mouse is over it.
- Popup sound and Popup volume, plus your own sound file if you want a different chime.
- Tell me when Timeline moves to the tray: the one-time notice when it hides in the tray.
There is also a Test notification button, so you can see the position and hear the sound without recording anything.
The recorder's own sounds
Starting, stopping and clipping each have a short sound too (More tab, Play sounds), and each can be replaced with your own file.
Tip. Pop-ups for results only appear when you need them: a notification about a finished compression shows only when the Timeline window is not in front, because you already see the result if it is.
Questions
Do the notifications show over fullscreen games?
Over borderless and windowed-fullscreen games, yes. In true exclusive fullscreen a game can hide any window, so the pop-up is skipped and only the sound plays.
Does Timeline inject into my game?
No. The pop-up is a normal small window; Timeline uses no injection or hooks.
Can I change where the pop-up appears?
Yes: Settings, General, Notifications, Position.
Can I use my own notification sound?
Yes. Choose a sound file in the notification settings.
