Update Timeline and read what is new: updates, release notes and the changelog
You should not have to hunt for new versions. Timeline checks for them, and the notes are one click away.
Timeline
Automatic updates
Timeline checks GitHub releases for a newer version and can update itself. New versions are published as releases of the project's GitHub repository, and the installer is a normal Windows installer (NSIS).
See your version and what is new
- Open Settings and choose About.
- The page shows your version.
- Open What's new to read the release notes.
The What's new window also opens after an update, so you see what changed in the version you just got. In a development build or a build that is not an official release, release notes are not fetched.
Try it in Timeline
Free for Windows 10 and 11. One installer, nothing else to set up.
Installing Timeline for the first time
- Click Download for Windows on the home page. The installer is a normal Windows installer (an .exe), and it comes from the project's GitHub releases.
- Run it and follow the installer.
- Open Timeline. There is nothing else to install: the player ships with its own copy of ffmpeg and the recorder with its own helpers.
- Optional: make Timeline your default player and look at the settings.
Timeline is made for Windows 10 and 11. It is a single app: the player, the recorder and watch together are all in it.
How to read the release notes
- New things are usually features you can try right away: look for the page of this blog that covers them.
- Fixed things tell you whether a problem you had is gone.
- If you skipped several versions, read the notes from newest to oldest on the releases page to see the whole story.
Download by hand
Every release has its installer on the project's releases page. The newest one is also what the website's Download button gets. To install over the top of your current version, just run the new installer.
Something went wrong?
- Open Settings, Logs: it shows what Timeline did with problems highlighted, and you can copy it.
- Report it on the project's issues page and paste the log.
- Check the usage data guide if you want to know what leaves your PC.
Tip. Your recordings and clips are saved in their own folders (by default a Timeline folder inside Videos), separate from the app itself.
